Dilma Rousseff’s Impeachment, Mortal Kombat X, Kim Kardashian and a Dominant App Business Model

In this week’s Brain Boost, first, you’re going to learn a little bit about the struggles in the Brazilian political economy and then about a new dominant mobile app business model.

Dilma Rousseff’s Impeachment
This week, impeachment proceedings began against Dilma Rousseff, who is the sitting president of Brazil and a former member of the Petrobras board of directors. Petrobras is the Brazilian state-owned oil company that has been embattled in a scandal because it turns out that roughly twenty two billion dollars worth of contracts were probably corruptly issued to politicians, friends of politicians, and business people who are comfortable giving bribes. Brazil has been struggling broadly, unemployment is now a five-year high, and GDP is expected to shrink by about 4% this year.

Mortal Kombat X, Kim Kardashian and a Dominant App Business Model
Next let’s look at this new dominant mobile app business model. Mortal Kombat X announced that it is about to release a package of downloadable players that users of the Mortal Kombat game can download for a price. What you’re seeing now is that apps are starting to act as platforms on which the application makers can sell premium content. So, usually, you can offer the app for free or for a low price and then upsell users once they have already started to enjoy the game.

This is not just a model that works for men. One of the most powerful examples of this model is Kim Kardashian’s game, which generates over $50,000 a day in sales or roughly nineteen million dollars a year, not to mention the boost they give to her brand and her image.
